Medicare 101

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older, but it also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific health conditions. Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming—but that’s where we come in.

Medicare Part A
Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and limited home healthcare services.

Medicare Part B
Covers doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, and medical equipment.

Medicare Part C
Medicare Advantage plans combine Parts A and B and often include:
- Prescription drug coverage
- Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
- Wellness programs
These plans are offered by private insurance companies and may provide cost-effective options for Central Valley residents.

Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Choosing the right Part D plan is important, as formularies and costs can change each year.

Medicare Supplement Medi-Gap
Medicare Supplement plans (Medigap) are private insurance policies that work alongside Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) to help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These plans are standardized and available nationwide, giving you the flexibility to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare—no networks required. They do not cover prescriptions, a separate policy is needed.
Enrollment Period
Medicare Enrollment Periods:
Understanding when you can enroll is just as important as choosing the right plan. We help guide clients through all Medicare enrollment periods, including:
- Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) It is when you first become eligible with part A & B. Lasts for 7 months, 3 months before 65, 1 month during your birthday month and 3 months after 65.
- Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7
- Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) Occur during specific life events.
Having a knowledgeable local Medicare insurance agent on your side can help you avoid late penalties and coverage gaps.

Applying for Part B
Step 1:
Apply through Social Security
Apply for Medicare Part B through the Social Security Administration at www.ssa.gov about 3 months before you want your coverage to begin. You can also apply over the phone at 1-800-772-1213 or in person at your local Social Security office.
If you’re retiring and losing employer coverage, this is especially important to avoid gaps and late enrollment penalties.
Step 2:
Wait for Processing & Watch Your Mail
After you submit your application, it may up to 6 weeks to process application. If you applied online, be sure to keep your login information handy so you can check your status. You’ll receive your Medicare card in the mail, which will show your coverage effective date.
Step 3:
Choose Your Coverage Path
Once your Part B is in place, decide whether to stay with Original Medicare Parts A & B or choose a Medicare plan, such as a Medicare Advantage (part C) or Medicare Supplement, to fit your healthcare and budget needs.
If you need help with any of these steps please call our office we can help with no charge 559-638-1340.
